John Rocque's map of County Armagh first produced in 1760 has been much maligned over the years for it's inaccuracy. But recent work by Jack Redmond has concluded that this is far from the truth. The County map consists of four sheets and includes inserted street plans of the town of Newry and the city of Armagh. The Armagh plan is a mine of information. Although there are a couple of minor flaws this is compensated for by the wealth of accurate detail. Depicting the City just before the arrival of the great improving Primate, Richard Robinson. One of the most important attractions of this plan is the inclusion of some of the ancient ecclesticial buildings that once made Armagh famous but were subsequently destroyed in the wars of the 16th and 17th centuries are located by Rocque. For example the site of Patrick's first church Temple Na Ferta is indicated by a white cruciform block just behind Scotch Street. |
